Every entrepreneur has their first small business experience; for these six students from Oliver Elementary, it starts this fall.
Through Jones Valley’s Student Farmers Market, fifth-grade students learn financial literacy skills during an eight-week class and then apply those skills by running a market after school once a week.
The market brings the local food system directly to the Oliver school community, where access to fresh produce is limited. The student market is at heart of the Good School Food model–utilizing a public school as the “hub” for community learning and services.
Each week the market has costs: produce, staff time, marketing materials, and curriculum development. This October, invest in Birmingham students and empower them to develop real-world skills.
