Last month, we challenged each of our Good School Food Instructors and Farm Fellows to take over Jones Valley Teaching Farm’s Instagram feed to show a day in the life of Good School Food, our hands-on food education model in Birmingham City Schools. This month, we plan to feature each of these takeovers on this blog! Join us as we experience a day in the life of Good School Food at Oliver Elementary School:
This is Joi Garrett, Oliver Elementary’s Good School Food Instructor
This is Anna Claire Rogers, Oliver Elementary’s Teaching Farm Fellow
Hey y’all! Oliver Elementary checking in for our takeover. Keep up- we’ll show you the nitty gritty of a day at our beloved Farm Lab. Here’s some of our first graders learning the parts of a plant. Overheard: “Look! This plant has tentacles!” We’ll take it. || #jonesvalleyteachingfarm #birmingham #oliverelementary #outdoorclassroom #GoodSchoolFood #bhamcityschools #🐙
We planted 2 radish seeds today in class! One will go in the light and the other will go in the dark in these first grader’s classroom. We will watch them to see which one grows the fastest (or at all)! || #birmingham #oliverelementary #bhamcityschools #outdoorclassroom #jonesvalleyteachingfarm #scienceyo
Today at Farm Lab Club: We discussed maize and it’s history as a staple food to native peoples of the Americas. Farmer Anna Claire showed the students how to make popcorn on the stovetop! Safe to say it was a-maize-ing! || #jonesvalleyteachingfarm #outdoorclassroom #bhamcityschools #oliverelementary #birmingham
Goodnight farm lab 🌙 Thanks for playing with us today! It was full of growth and food and fellowship. We are thankful for our students and our chance to teach them and learn from them. Oliver out!|| #jonesvalleyteachingfarm #birmingham #oliverelementary #bhamcityschools #outdoorclassroom
