In 2012-2013, Jones Valley Teaching Farm launched the Good School Food program at Glen Iris Elementary in Birmingham, Alabama. Now in our fourth year, we implement Good School Food in seven Birmingham City Schools (5 of which are in one distinct feeder pattern in the Woodlawn community).
Good School Food is a food and nutrition education model that uses food as a platform to connect students to cross-curricular, standards-based content during the school day. Each Good School Food partner school includes a Farm Lab (K-8) or Urban Farm (High School) on the school’s campus and one full time Good School Food Instructor supported by one Teaching Farm Fellow. We also offer after school opportunities like Farm Lab Club and Student-Run Farmers Markets.
Last month, we decided to challenge each of our school teams to take over Jones Valley Teaching Farm’s Instagram feed to show a day in the life of their work. This month, we plan to feature each of these takeovers on this blog! Join us as we experience a day in the life of Good School Food at Putnam Middle School:
This is Leah Hillman, Putnam Middle School’s Good School Food Instructor
This is Kelly Baker, Putnam Middle School’s Teaching Farm Fellow.
